We have been slowly updating our 1990s home room by room, and sometimes revamping them twice until we find the right fit. Our main bathroom was a space that I always dreaded taking on. It was dated, bone coloured fixtures, an old chipped vanity (which I chalk painted the cabinets when we moved in and covered the yellow counters with a peel and stick countertop that has since melted away – Yuk!). I mean, I tried, but I knew it needed a complete reno.
Before diving in, I created a mood board with all my dream bathroom items from Home Hardware. I love that Home Hardware has so much selection for any budget. I was able to pick our vanity, faucets, toilet, paint colour and even the accessories to completely transform our space.
I didn’t want to change the footprint of the space, as I am more of a weekend DIY kinda gal, and I was hoping for a project we could accomplish easily within my skill set. I mean how hard would it be to change a toilet and a couple of faucets???
We started the reno by removing the vanity and toilet and already I could see how it would all come together. Installing the vanity was seamless as we made sure to measure to ensure the perfect fit.
I was waffling between doing a board and batten wall or vertical shiplap or maybe a beadboard to add some interest to the walls. I ended up finding some 1/8inch plywood door skims from our local Home Hardware, and we ripped them down into 4inch strips to create a vertical half wall around the entire room. It really gave it that cottage core look we are creating in our home.
Next up was the paint. I wanted a soft cottage green and ‘Sprout’ by BeautiTone was the perfect creamy, not blue, not purple vintage green for the walls. For the upper portion of the bathroom, I went with a brighter white ‘White Shoulders’, because this room has very little light it really made an impact against the green and natural woods.
I will share that we decided to hire a plumber after 5 hours of trying all sorts of TETRIS ways of how to get a pipe from the wall to our new sink and with any renos with older pipes we ran into a BIT of a problem – we ended up opening a small portion of our wall and redoing all of the pipes to the bathroom. Sigh.
Lastly was my favorite part: the styling! Home Hardware has recently come out with a line of bathroom products called InStyle and they have so much selection to fit any style. We chose a white textured shower curtain as well as a beautiful braided rug for those little feet getting out of the bath.
We are so happy with the end result which totalled just under $2000 (not including our plumbing costs). Now it suits our home so much better. We finally have a space for the boys to properly store their bathroom items, they can have a properly functioning bath and shower and we have a toilet that doesn’t sound like a ‘nightmare’ (my son used to say it shook the house when it was flushed).
